Pre-Release Brews – Pirate Warrior, Aggro Paladin, Midrange Buff Hunter

Preview

If someone has missed it, the new expansion is coming out on Thursday. Yes, tomorrow. Well, maybe on Friday for EU, because we always get shafted, but the point is that it will be available really, really soon. So it’s a time to start thinking about the deck you will want to test out at the beginning!

And honestly, there are a lot of possibilities. Yesterday I’ve listed 3 Kabal decks, one for each class: RenoLock, Reno Dragon Priest and Secret Tempo Mage. Be sure to check them out if you haven’t yet. Today, I’ll focus on the second gang – Grimy Goons. And so, I’ve prepared 3 more decklists.

Just like Kabal will be mostly Control (you know, Reno theme), Grimy Goons support a way faster play style. The buff strategy works best in Aggro/Midrange decks and I’ll talk about both. I’ll also add a deck that I think might become the new so-called “cancer” of the ladder, Pirate Warrior. Of course it’s impossible to predict it pre-release, but to be fair, I think it might be one of the strongest decks out there. And so I’ll start with it.

Thanks for the post – have enjoyed reading all your content so far on the site.

Hobart Grapplehammer – why did you exclude him from Pirate Warrior? IMO it is the 2nd most exciting card of the explansion for the archetype! Even just getting +2 damage from a buffed arcanite reaper T5-6 would be worth it. You want to close out games by turn 6/7, and I have missed lethal by 1-2hp countless times. Maybe too slow and not that significant since it does not budf durability, but I can’t wait to try it regardless.

Also, I would never remove even a single copy of Mortal Strike…as long as decks in the meta run minions with Taunt (and all do except Rogue and sometimes mage), it is the most consistent win condition for games that go long (pas turn 7). Double MS on T8 when you are below 12hp is 12damage which can lead to wins even in unfavored matchups where you have no chance to hit face past T4/5.

I’ve been running Pirate Warrior (standard list with -1 Frothing, +1 Abusive) all season and am in love with the playstyle. The only matchups that I really struggle with are vs Dragon Warrior and Zoo. Midrange Shaman is usually winable unless they draw 2x Ferral Sprits + 1-2 TFB or get really lucky with rolling taunt & spell power totems.

I thought about Hobart really long but in the end I don’t think it will be worth it. The main problem is a 2/2 body – it’s really, really weak 2-drop and as a Pirate Warrior you want that early game tempo.

Let’s say you go turn 1 N’Zoth’s First Mate into turn 2 Bloodsail Raider – pretty common opening. 3/3 Bloodsail Raider is not only harder to remove (doesn’t die to things like Arcane Blast, Living Roots, Disciple of C’Thun etc.), gets better trades, but also pushes for more face damage.

It would be insane if it also buffed weapons gained from N’Zoth’s First Mate and Upgrade or it had 3/2 or 2/3 stats. Then it would be an auto-include. But in the current state, I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

Of course, Mortal Strike is amazing and that’s why I didn’t touch when finding cards to remove – I’ve prefered to get rid of one Heroic Strike instead. But as much as I love the card in slower matchup, if Aggro was to dominate over the ladder, it’s too slow. You generally win Aggro mirror matchups by winning the early game board control and Mortal Strike doesn’t help with that. So that’s why, IF Aggro decks were to take over the ladder, which might happen, because both Pirate Warrior and Aggro Paladin look promising + people are usually testing greedy decks during the first few days so Aggro might pop out as a counter, so IF Aggro decks would be really popular, dropping one copy might be good idea.

By the way, how were you finding Abusive in the Pirate Warrior? I thought about running it, but that was pre-nerf. I’m not sure if the 1/1 body would be good enough right now.

Hi Stone, thanks for the decks! This Season I went easily (unbelievable 68% win Rate) to Rank 5 with pirate Warrior, so I am really excited to test your new Versio! :-)

    • Stonekeep says:

Hey direna! Congratulations, that’s a really nice win rate 😀 Did you go for the Legend or stop at rank 5?

I hope that you’re going to enjoy the Gadgetzan version and the new expansion in general.

I tried to go further, but realized very soon that the skill level from there on is much higher than till Rank 5. Which wasn’t a surprise of course. :-)

So I stopped there, but just 5.5 hours from 14 to 5 was amazing, with 3 times 10+ winstreak.

I guess, besides some luck, the surprise-factor with this deck is still very high. And the high amount of games in a short time.

Stone I just went on a 10 game winstreak from 18 to 13 with this list… the deck is great.
