Arena Quiz! Mage Arena Guide with MrShine – Part 2

It’s time for the conclusion of last week’s Mage arena guide! In this video I’ll break down the deck that we assembled back in my Mage Drafting Quiz, and see where it ended up! I’ll be taking an extra close look at my results, explain my reasoning, and we’ll walk through the games I experienced during the run.

Hey professor! this seems to have been happening more often in the last 2 weeks, I expect people keep improving in the arena, and maybe less newbies fall in… or maybe blizzard has changed its matchmaking algorithm? anyone knows how matchmaking works in the arena?

    • MrShine says:

As far as matchmaking works, my understanding is Hearthstone will always try to match you with someone of a similar record. Ideally 0-1 players are matched with others at a 0-1 record, 7-0 is matched with other 7-0s. Of course things have to be fudged a bit if there aren’t others with near identical records on at the same time as you, so there probably are times you get matched with someone with a better record than the deck you currently are playing.

As far as recent arena games, I’ve heard a lot of speculation that folks are saving their gold for GvG, so with less ‘fish’ in the arena that leaves more ‘sharks’ that generally profit off of arena, which means tougher matches overall.

Once GvG comes out though I bet arena will fill up again since people know they can get GvG packs from arena runs.

  2. Cool video. I’m sad to see the series coming to an end. Maybe youd consider revisiting when new sets come out?

Regarding you’re poorer than expected run here, I’ve been in an arena slump myself the last few weeks. I keep going 3/3 on average with decks that I know should do better. Its dishartening to lose with a hand full of cards while the opponent curves out perfectly to the last card and damage. Good thing I’m not paying cash to play though as my fist would surely be going through my monitor.

Yeah arena can be super frustrating sometimes, it’s easy to go on tilt but (as I mentioned in the video) sometimes you have to take a deep breath and remember the top arena win % “soft cap” probably hovers around the 75-80% mark. Quite simply you can’t win ’em all. I lost to a priest with 2x light wells, inner fire gimmickry yesterday. Annoying to say the least.

Regarding the future, I still plan on contributing to the site! The youtube channel will still have weekly content, in fact we may do something ‘special’ between ADWCTA, Sheng, and myself in early 2015 😉 Arena content won’t go away though, in fact I may still do more quiz videos but it may change from a weekly thing to something else.

Hey there MrShine! Thanks for another video. Funny how this run reminded me of my usual game in arena (got good deck! dam the luck, shitty result)… however, taking luck into account… I’m still so far behind in gameplay (and a little in drafting). So I’ll await eagerly more analysis and advice so I can hope to improve.

    See you next time!

I should have mentioned this before – if anyone wants advice on gameplay in the arena I suggest uploading video on youtube of some of your matches. Shoot me the link & I’d be happy to comment on turns based on what I might have done.
