There are several main subgenres of strategy games – turn-based strategy (TBS) and real-time strategy (RTS). In turn-based gameplay, the player has to perform all necessary actions within a certain time (while the opponent, be it another player or an artificial intelligence, waits his turn), alternating his moves with those of his opponent. In real time, all players interact with the game world simultaneously, without any time limits.

As a rule, strategic games are mainly based on the management of a few playing units or a whole detachment of different kinds of game characters (except perhaps town-building simulators). In the course of the game, the player must develop through the extraction of resources, the construction of various buildings, the creation of new combat and peace units and many other internal game elements (economic and diplomatic relations).

This is largely because real-time allows the developers to attract more attention to the game, to organize all sorts of tournaments and competitions. Also the games of this genre are more dynamic and spectacular, because of the rapid change of the situation. As a rule, their essence is to destroy the enemy’s base and his army, at the expense of their own resources. All this requires players to develop a certain approach, strategic techniques and tricks to win over a rival or rivals.
